Spring is one of the busiest times of year for groundwork, and choosing the right excavator makes a real difference to how smoothly a project runs. Get the size wrong and you’ll either struggle to manoeuvre on a tight site or find the job takes far longer than it should.
For smaller domestic jobs, such as digging footings, clearing a garden, or laying a patio base, a mini excavator is usually the best fit, offering enough digging power without the space demands of larger machinery. Larger groundworks, drainage runs or land clearance projects typically call for a mid-size or larger excavator to keep things moving efficiently.
It’s also worth thinking about access to the site itself. Narrow gateways, soft ground or limited turning space can rule out bigger machines regardless of how much digging is needed, so it’s always worth checking access before booking.
